Are you looking to climb the most iconic peak in Chile’s Lake District? Climbing Volcán Osorno (2,652m) is a bucket-list experience for mountaineers visiting Puerto Varas and Ensenada. Known as the “Fuji of South America” for its perfect conical shape, this stratovolcano offers a world-class glacier climbing experience with panoramic views of the Andes and the Llanquihue Lake.
At Chile Adventure Guides, we provide professional, safety-first expeditions to the summit, led by expert local guides specialized in high-mountain terrain.
Location: Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park (near Puerto Varas).
Difficulty: Physically demanding / Technical (Glacier & Ice).
Vertical Elevation Gain: 1,400 meters (4,593 ft).
Best Season: July to January (Winter/Spring offer the best snow conditions).
Duration: Full-day (approx. 12-14 hours).
Our Osorno Volcano climb is structured to maximize safety and summit success through a strict “Turn-around Time” policy.
We meet for a mandatory gear and safety briefing. We evaluate your equipment, check the latest mountain weather forecasts, and discuss the technical glacier conditions.
04:30 AM | Pickup: Private transport from your accommodation in Puerto Varas.
05:30 AM | Base Camp: Arrival at Refugio Teski (1,200m). Final gear check.
05:45 AM | Trekking Start: We begin the ascent over volcanic scree and initial snowfields.
09:00 AM | Glacier Transition: We equip technical gear (crampons, ropes, ice axes) as we enter the glaciated zone.
01:00 PM | Summit Deadline: Our safety limit to reach the 2,652m peak.
05:00 PM | Return: Descent to Refugio Teski and transport back to your hotel.
Personal Clothing & Layers
Base Layer: Breathable, synthetic t-shirt (avoid cotton).
Mid-Layer: Warm fleece or “polar” jacket.
Insulation: High-quality down or synthetic puffy jacket.
Outer Shell: Waterproof mountain jacket and pants (Gore-Tex or similar).
Accessories: Warm gloves for ice, a sun hat, and a warm beanie.
Footwear & Essentials
Mountain Boots: Semi-rigid or rigid boots (essential for crampon use).
Eye Protection: Category 4 sunglasses and snow goggles (antiparras).
Hydration: At least a 2-liter water bottle or bladder.
Backpack: Minimum 30-liter capacity to carry your gear and snacks.
Included Technical Gear (We Provide)
Individual: Professional climbing harness, helmet, crampons, and ice axe.
Group Safety: Climbing ropes, carabiners, snow/ice anchors, and a specialized mountain first-aid kit.
Communication: Satellite GPS In-Reach for emergency connectivity.
