The Summit is Connection

Marina is a passionate young Chilean guide. She specializes in climbing and mountaineering. Her base is in Central Chile. Today, we invite you to explore her fascinating journey in the world of mountains. You will learn about her experience and what she offers through Chile Adventure Guides. She forges authentic connections between travelers and Chile’s imposing geography.

The Call of the Andes: An Early Beginning

Q: How did a young Chilean woman decide to dedicate herself to climbing and mountaineering, especially in a demanding environment like the Chilean Andes?

“While studying psychology, a friend invited me to try rock climbing in Patagonia. The first time I got on the rock, I couldn’t make it to the top. However, I loved the bodily sensation and the challenge of moving in such an unfamiliar way. The second time I tried, after a great battle, I reached the top of the route. I fell in love with the view and the beautiful landscape I could see from that vantage point! From that moment, I never stopped climbing. I naturally followed the progression of outdoor climbing.”

Q: Do you remember a specific moment or experience in the mountains that sealed your passion and prompted you to become a guide?

“Thanks to climbing, I was encouraged to try ski mountaineering. While practicing skiing in Araucanía (another beautiful region of Chile), I had the opportunity to climb Villarrica volcano – the most active volcano in our country, where you can see lava from the crater. When I summited that peak and skied down, that’s when my passion for the mountains truly began. I knew then I wanted to continue learning to share those moments with people by guiding them.”

Guiding Towards the Summit: The Unique Climbing Experience in Chile

Q: Guiding in the mountains of Central Chile, like Cochamó or Cajón del Maipo, is challenging. What makes each expedition unique for you and your clients?

“Each expedition is unique because every person I share the Chilean Andes with is unique. I tailor each experience to the individual. My goal is for you to feel comfortable in places where perhaps not everyone feels at ease, like the Chilean mountains or during climbing in Chile. Being a woman guide who leads an expedition creates a distinct, friendlier, and more comfortable atmosphere.”

Q: As a climbing guide, what special techniques or knowledge do you share to help clients overcome their fears and reach new heights safely?

“Primarily, I ensure that progress in climbing is gradual. I focus on highlighting the positive emotions it leaves in your body and mind. My aim is for every experience in the Chilean Andes to empower you and bring out your best.”

Q: For you, beyond the summit or the route, what does it mean to build an authentic connection with the mountains and with the people you guide?

“In the Chilean Andes, one can achieve an authentic connection with oneself, finding inner peace within the natural environment as we ascend. I help you reach a state of moving meditation, bodily awareness, and enjoyment of the present moment. Additionally, I show you the beauty of this mountain lifestyle and, above all, the magnificence of our country, Chile. Nothing compares to breathing the pure air on a Chilean summit.”

Safety and Professionalism: The Commitment of a Young Expert

Q: Safety is fundamental at Chile Adventure Guides. What certifications and experience back you to guide confidently in demanding Chilean terrains?

“In 2022, I completed the course to become a Sport Climbing Guide/Instructor (ACGM – Chilean Mountain Guides Association). Since then, I’ve worked at various educational institutions, like the Universidad de la Frontera and Duoc UC, as well as privately. I am currently pursuing Mountain Guide training with ANGM, a course with IFMGA/UIAGM international standards. I’m always taking first aid courses, like the WFR (Wilderness First Responder) certification, to stay as updated as possible. I also took a Big Wall Rescue Course with UIAGM/IFMGA Instructor Nicolás Gutiérrez. Furthermore, I care deeply about environmental protection. I completed the LNT (Leave No Trace, NOLS) Monitor course to learn how to interact with the environment leaving the least possible impact. Since I started guiding in 2021, SERNATUR has backed me.”

Q: Patagonian mountain environments can be unpredictable. How do you prepare to ensure a safe and successful experience on each expedition?

“The key always lies in personalized and very careful planning for each activity. I always make sure to thoroughly know the mountain and anticipate every change in the dynamic and shifting scenario of our Andes, especially in Chilean Patagonia.”

Q: How do you promote sustainability and the “Leave No Trace” principles on your tours to protect fragile mountain ecosystems?

“I strive to explain the concept to my clients so they can apply it during the outing. These ecosystems are fragile, and it’s our responsibility to help conserve them. The Andes is a sacred place that we must help preserve, as it remains very unspoiled.”
