Between Summits and Rocks: The Origin of a Patagonian Passion
Q: Anais, how did you get started in the world of mountaineering and climbing, and, What led you to specialize in Patagonia?
“I started mountaineering when I entered university to study Ecotourism. It was then I learned that in
Patagonia, the climatic conditions made climbing challenging. That, combined with the breathtaking views this incredible territory offers, captivated me. That’s how it became my favorite destination, and a few years later, I decided to live here , first in
Torres del Paine and then along the Carretera Austral, where I’ve lived for four years now.”
Q: What was the expedition or moment in the mountains that most profoundly impacted you and made you decide this would be your professional path?
“I distinctly remember climbing the Puntiagudo Volcano with two friends. One of them is a mountain guide, and seeing her so prepared to face problems in the mountains inspired me to dedicate myself professionally to this. It’s a job I absolutely love! Being in nature, enjoying the clean air, and marveling at incredible views are truly wonderful.”

Guiding the Adventure: Climbing and Trekking in Patagonia

Q: As a mountain and climbing guide, what makes each expedition in Cerro Castillo or Torres del Paine unique for you and the travelers you accompany?
“The weather is so unpredictable here; it’s always a surprise what you’ll encounter. I like to approach the meteorological conditions calmly, and I want to ensure a positive experience with good vibes for everyone.”
Q: What key advice do you share with your clients to prepare physically and mentally for the challenges of trekking in Torres del Paine or climbing in Cerro Castillo?
“Drink water, always. I believe staying hydrated is an excellent way to approach any activity. Also, walking 10 minutes a day for two months before your trip will help you get into a good routine.”
Q: Beyond reaching the summit, what does it mean for you to build an authentic connection with the mountains and with the people you guide?
“It means fully enjoying the moment we are sharing in the mountains, surrounded by nature. It’s about being present, truly feeling the experience.”

Leadership and Safety: The Priority at Every Step

Q: Safety is the number one priority at Chile Adventure Guides. What certifications and experience back you to guide confidently in demanding terrains like Patagonia?
“I am a Mountain and Climbing Guide certified by the National Mountain Guides Association (ANGM). My WFR (Wilderness First Responder) certification is current. I also have my Sernatur registration. I’ve had the opportunity to explore Patagonia by climbing its mountains, and knowing these places intimately helps me make sound decisions.”
Q: Patagonian weather is famous for its unpredictability. How do you prepare to ensure a safe and successful experience on each expedition, regardless of the conditions?
“It’s important to approach it with good humor. Dry bags or heavy-duty trash bags help a lot to keep gear dry. And sandals are always good friends too!”
Q: How do you integrate sustainability and the “Leave No Trace” principles into your tours to protect the fragile mountain ecosystems?
“I always try to explain the concept to my clients so they can apply it during the outing. Ecosystems are fragile, and it’s up to us to preserve them.”
